So, I had a dream about the end of the world.
I know the world is going to end soon - a gamma ray burster nearby somewhere is going to fry us. But it might be ok, if we can get to a ship that can travel faster than light, so we can outrun it.
But first, myself, some family and friends go down the pub. After a while, I get somewhat nervous - the world is probably going to end soon. I manage to persuade people that time has come to move on to the ship.
The ship is, rather unexpectedly, a church, or maybe just a church tower. There's quite a queue of us, as we walk up the spiral stairs outside, and then descend through the plushly furnished (leather seats, bookcases, decanters) interior rooms. The whole thing seems quite unstable, and rocks back and forwards like a boat if you sit down in a chair violently. Eventually everyone is aboard, and we set off.
I'm not certain, but Melvyn Bragg may be the pilot.
We make a rather uncertain start, and shortly seem to be skimming the rooftops of a city (London?) . I'm concerned about the time; shouldn't we be going into orbit? Apparently the ship can't get to orbit, so we're going to a theatre instead.
We arrive at the theatre, which is in the middle of nowhere. Everyone else goes to watch the play - I'm left outside, feeling frantic. The world begins to end.
The sky starts to melt, great red boils burning out of the angry purple bruise, Like a huge lava lamp, these boils rapidly rise, tearing the sky apart. Radiation pours down.

Hope this isn't a portent
The thing which immediatly puzzled me is how you came to know of this gamma ray burst, given we're going to be frazzled at light speed. Don't worry, you've probably just read too many stories re bursts lately. If Melvyn Bragg really was piloting I'd have to consider staying at home. Your FTL ship actually sounds much like the "great college of my dream" I dreamed off years ago (but more rocky). Turned out it isn't Gateshead College, but that's all I know. What was the play? It could be important, you never know.Oh, great red blobs and purple bruises. You haven't been /tasting/ those mushrooms have you?

Re: Hope this isn't a portent
As to how I knew, clearly I'm quantum-entangled with the Godhead. Yeah, the burst is probably directly from "Diaspora" by Greg Egan. Not sure about Melvyn, as I said. Somebody like that, anyway. The sky melting was pretty freaky. I did have a glass of whiskey before bed...
