Trip to Newcastle/Gateshead over weekend, sheltering in the abode of Ian. We went on a trip to the seaside, where we clambered over rockpools, chased and were chased by waves and generally acted like fools.

Then we went and visited a castle / priory, which was quite well preserved, as these things go. I'll spare you my rambling train of thought about this subject. As compensation - a photo.

I rather like Newcastle, especially whizzing across the Tyne on the Metro. Being built across a fairly steep river valley makes for all sorts of excellent views and clambering up steps. Good bridges!

In other news, I am being dispatched to Denmark (in April). Specifically, Aarhus, a place I find it very difficult to spell. I hope that is right ;-)

Anyway, they have a synchrotron, and I am going to try and do some science with it, or something. Advice on essential viewing in the Aarhus area welcome - come on you closet Dane-o-philes, I know you're out there...

Århus: a potted guide

You can spell it either Århus or Aarhus, but the former is more common (this is due to a change in Danish orthography early in the 20th Century). Whichever way you spell it, it's pronounced or hoose (to rhyme with 'moose'). It's the second largest city in Denmark (after Copenhagen) and has a very well respected university (as I'm sure you're aware).

As to touristy things you might do while there, I'll bring over my copy of the Lonely Planet guide to Denmark for your perusal, and I'll see if I can get any ideas for things-that-tourists-miss from a friend who works there.
